Thanks to Thomas Sauer (Fayette County [KY] Public Schools) for his guidance in writing learning targets and learner target bubble sheets.

  1. Curriculum maps are a snapshot of the course. Each map includes the Colorado Standards Prepared Graduate Competences at the top of the map. The map also includes the target proficiency level for the standards in the first two columns on the left.
  2. The scope and sequence documents detail each thematic unit. Notice that the themes guide the instruction and not the text. See how the text is listed under resources along with other ideas. The text is one of the resources. The scope follows the Understanding by Design framework (backward design) with enduring understanding and guiding questions, etc. It includes more details about context, structure, and culture as well as assessment possibilities, which at the moment is general.
  3. The learner targets are for students. This document is in 'I can" student statements.
  4. The learner target bubble sheets helps students set goals for each unit
  5. The UbD unit organizer is for teachers to help them guide and build their units. TSD UbD template:


Middle School Grades 6-8

The only middle school classes listed in the Middle School course description book are:

Intro to World Languages
French, Spanish
Grade 6-One semester
Intro to World Languages is a one-semester course that offers students an opportunity to begin to learn both French and Spanish at basic proficiency level before choosing one language for further study in Grade 7. Students will perform listening, speaking, reading and writing 21st century global
communicative tasks as they discover the different cultures, including the arts, foods, music and daily life of the French and Spanish speaking world. Students will also make connections to other disciplines such as math, history and science, as well as sharpen their languages art skills in their own
language. Upon completion of Introduction to World Languages, students can take either French I,Spanish I or German I class in ninth grade at the high school.


French 1A, Spanish 1A
Grade 7-One-year course
Level 1A in both French and Spanish is the equivalent of the first semester of Level I world language at high school. Students will perform interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communicative speaking, reading, writing and listening tasks within the novice-low range on the ACTFL
Proficiency scale by:
• using the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the relationship among the practices, products and perspectives of the new cultures studied;
• building, reinforcing, and expanding their knowledge of other subjects while using the language to think critically and creatively to solve problems;
• acquiring information and accessing multiple perspectives that are available through the language and its cultures;
• developing a better understanding of one’s own language and culture;
• using the language both within and beyond the school setting to work collaboratively as they connect to the globalized world.
Upon completion of French 1A or Spanish 1A, students will take either French 1B or Spanish 1B Grade 8.


French 1B, Spanish 1B
Grade 8-One-year course
Level 1B in both French and Spanish is the equivalent of the second semester of Level I world language at high school. Students will perform interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communicative speaking, reading, writing and listening tasks within the novice-low to novice-mid
ranges on the ACTFL Proficiency scale by:
• using the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the relationship among the practices, products and perspectives of the new cultures studied;
• building, reinforcing, and expanding their knowledge of other subjects while using the language to think critically and creatively to solve problems;
• acquiring information and accessing multiple perspectives that are available through the language
and its cultures;
• developing a better understanding of one’s own language and culture;
• using the language both within and beyond the school setting to work collaboratively as they connect to the globalized world.
Upon successful completion of French 1B or Spanish 1B, students are eligible to take either French II
or Spanish II in ninth grade. Students may also decide to take German I.
